You can visit independently, but the castle is a large complex rather than a single building, and a guide is the difference between walking through it and understanding it. Guided tours also handle the ticket tiers, which decide which buildings you can actually enter.

It’s roughly two and a half to three hours each way, so it’s a committed day — but the old town and castle are among the best preserved in Central Europe. Tours usually give you several free hours there rather than a rushed walk-through.

The Sedlec Ossuary, decorated with the remains of tens of thousands of people, sits just outside Kutná Hora about an hour east of Prague. It’s usually combined with the town’s Gothic cathedral and silver-mining history on a half- or full-day tour.
